2010 CADILLAC SRX: A DISTINCTIVE ALTERNATIVE FOR TODAY'S LUXURY CROSSOVER CONSUMER

DETROIT - Cadillac unveiled the next-generation 2010 SRX Crossover today, featuring a completely new design and more-efficient, high-technology engine choices. The new SRX is a mid-sized luxury crossover coming to the North American International Auto Show next week.

"The all-new SRX is a fresh and compelling crossover aimed squarely at the priorities of luxury buyers," said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. "With new technologies for increased efficiency and safety, the redesigned 2010 SRX Crossover focuses on both the emotional and pragmatic sides of the luxury consumer."

The 2010 SRX is designed for efficient performance, including the choice of two high-tech six-cylinder engines that are new to Cadillac - the smallest-displacement engines it offers in North America. A new, 3.0L direct injected V-6 engine is standard and a new, 2.8L turbocharged V-6 is optional. Both engines employ technology that helps produce strong performance that is typical of larger-displacement engines. Direct injection enables a 25-percent reduction in hydrocarbon emissions. Fuel economy in the mid-20s on the highway is expected, but testing isn't yet complete.

Performance and safety are enhanced by an available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system that is designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions. The AWD system includes an advanced electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) that distributes torque as needed from side-to-side along the rear axle, in addition from the front to rear axle. The pre-emptive, active-on-demand system provides an extra measure of capability in wet or icy conditions.

The 2010 SRX rides on a wide track that was designed to deliver a nimble, responsive driving experience. It seats five, with generous occupant and cargo room, and can tow up to 3,500 pounds (1,587 kg).

Due in 2011, the Cruze is a global small car that will replace the long-in-the-tooth Cobalt on our shores. Power will come from a 1.8-liter or a turbo 1.4-liter four-cylinder, with fuel economy as high as 40 mpg on the EPA highway cycle. If the production Cruze looks as good as the model that debuted at the Paris show, Chevy could have a small hit on its hands.

The 2010 LaCrosse will be the first domestic car built on the next generation of GM’s global midsize car architecture, formerly known as Epsilon. Overseas, the Opel Insignia, which recently won the European Car of the Year award, uses the same architecture.
Compared with the previous model, the 2010 LaCrosse is about an inch shorter but has a 1.2-inch longer wheelbase. This stretches the wheels farther to the corners, giving the car a more athletic stance. The exterior design employs cues of the Buick Invicta concept car, and the sculpted sides and waterfall grille are reminiscent of the successful Buick Enclave full-size crossover SUV.

Returning trim levels will include CX, CXL and sporty CXS models. CX and CXL models use the new direct-injected 3.0-liter V6 that GM is putting into several vehicles. It produces 255 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque, and Buick estimates fuel-economy ratings of 18/27 mpg (city/hwy).

The CXS model comes with a carryover 3.6-liter V6 rated at 280 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque. Buick estimates fuel-economy numbers of 17/26 mpg for the CXS and says it will be capable of reaching 60 mph in less than seven seconds. Both engines use a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The interior has been upgraded with real wood trim, blue-lit instrumentation and ambient lighting, and stitched leather trim on the dash. Other available features include Bluetooth connectivity, a USB audio interface, a rearview camera, adaptive headlights, a heads-up display and a side blind-spot alert system.

The New G3

The 2009 Pontiac G3 is a new entry-level car for the U.S. market from this General Motors division. This subcompact car slots below Pontiac's G5, sharing its basic design and powertrain with the Chevrolet Aveo. Like Aveo, the G3 is a solid contender. Initially, G3 models slated for the U.S. will be 4-door hatchbacks. A 4-door sedan is also sold in Canada and might be available in the U.S. later in the model year. The lone engine is a 106-hp 1.6-liter 4-cylinder that teams with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS and front side airbags. Standard features include air conditioning and a CD/MP3 audio system. Note that, prior to model-year 2009, the G3 was for sale in Canada as the Pontiac Wave (2009 Canadian models are called G3 Wave). We have found the 2009 Pontiac G3 to have the performance and style of much more expensive cars.
